How to measure for a pond liner

Liners are cut to size, so the measurement matters more than anything else you choose. Dig first, then measure the hole, not the plan.

  1. Measure the longest length and widest width

Run a tape across the top of the hole at its longest and widest points, even if the pond is curved or kidney-shaped. A liner is always a rectangle.

  2. Add twice the deepest point

The liner has to go down one side and back up the other, so add the maximum depth twice to both the length and the width. Shelves don't change this.

  3. Add an overlap for the edge

Allow 30cm each side to bury or trap under edging, or 50cm if you're laying paving or rocks over it. Round up to the next stock size, never down.

Pond liner FAQ

Pond liner questions, answered

The questions we're asked most often before someone orders a liner.

Still unsure? Ask us. Call 01282 270214 WhatsApp Expert advice
How do I work out what size pond liner I need?

Measure the longest length and widest width of the hole, then add twice the maximum depth and twice your edge overlap to each. For example, a pond 3m long, 2m wide and 0.6m deep with a 30cm overlap needs a liner of at least 4.8m × 3.8m. Our pond liner calculator does the sum for you and shows the stock sizes that fit.

Which pond liner material should I choose?

EPDM and butyl rubber are the most flexible and the easiest to fold into curved, shelved or fish ponds. HDPE is stiffer and suits large ponds with simple shapes. LDPE and PVC are lighter, lower-cost options for wildlife and small garden ponds. Compare them above, or ask us and we'll recommend one.

Do I need underlay under my pond liner?

We recommend it under every liner. Underlay sits between the soil and the liner and protects it from stones and roots. Our 200gsm geotextile underlay comes in sizes to match, our liner kits include it, and some HDPE liners come with it free.

How deep should my pond be?

Wildlife ponds work best with shallow shelves of 10–30cm and a deepest point of around 60cm. Goldfish ponds are usually 60–90cm deep, and koi ponds deeper still, often 1.2m or more. Enter your deepest point in the calculator; shelves don't change the liner size.

How much is delivery?

Delivery is free on every UK order with no minimum spend, whether you order a liner, underlay, a kit or equipment. See our shipping policy for dispatch and delivery details.

Can I return a pond liner?

Pond liners are cut to size for your order, so they are non-returnable. That's why it's worth checking your measurements with the calculator, or with us, before you order. Other items can be returned within 14 days in their original condition, and if anything arrives damaged, send us a photo within 24 hours. Read the full returns policy.

What does the liner guarantee cover?

Each liner carries the guarantee shown on its product page, from 15 years up to lifetime depending on the material and grade. Guarantees are manufacturer warranties covering material or manufacturing defects, so keep your order confirmation safe.

Are your liners safe for fish and wildlife?

Yes. The pond liners we sell are suitable for fish, plants and wildlife. Rinse the liner, let the pond settle before adding fish, and use a dechlorinator if you fill it from the tap.

Do you supply landscapers and trade customers?

Yes. For larger projects, several ponds or sizes beyond our listed range, send us your measurements and we'll quote liner, underlay and equipment together. Request a quote or call 01282 270214.
