EPDM Pond Liners UK — The Expert Buyer's Guide
EPDM (ethylene propylene diene monomer) rubber pond liner is the most widely specified pond liner for garden ponds, wildlife ponds, koi ponds, and ecological habitat creation in the UK. Its combination of flexibility, fish-safe certification, UV resistance, and 25-year guarantee makes it the benchmark against which all other liner types are measured.
Why EPDM Is the UK's Most Popular Pond Liner
- Fish-safe certification: Our EPDM is manufactured to EPDM-45 grade — the international standard for pond liner that is safe for fish, amphibians, and all UK aquatic invertebrates
- Exceptional flexibility: Elongation at break 300–450% — EPDM conforms effortlessly to irregular pond shapes, natural contours, and complex marginal profiles
- 25-year manufacturer's guarantee: Backed by the world's leading EPDM manufacturers
- UV resistant by chemistry: EPDM's saturated polymer backbone is inherently resistant to UV degradation — no surface coating or treatment needed
- Temperature range: -40°C to +120°C continuous service — performs in all UK weather conditions
- Low maintenance: EPDM requires no special treatment or annual inspection beyond a visual check

Which EPDM Thickness Do You Need?
0.75mm EPDM — The Standard Choice
0.75mm EPDM is the standard UK specification for garden ponds, wildlife ponds, and amenity water features up to 2m depth. It provides the optimal balance of puncture resistance, flexibility, and cost for most garden applications.
1.02mm EPDM — Premium Specification
1.02mm is recommended for: koi ponds where fish health depends on watertight containment; ponds in rocky subgrades where additional puncture resistance is needed; ponds over 2m depth; and any application where premium performance and long-term confidence are the priority.
How to Size Your EPDM Pond Liner
Use the formula: Liner length = Pond length + (2 × maximum depth) + 0.6m overlap. Example: A pond 4m long × 3m wide × 0.8m deep needs: length = 4 + 1.6 + 0.6 = 6.2m; width = 3 + 1.6 + 0.6 = 5.2m. We supply custom-cut EPDM to the nearest 0.5m, so you'd order 6.5m × 5.5m.
EPDM Pond Liner Installation — Key Points
- Lay 200 g/m² geotextile underlay over the prepared subgrade before placing EPDM
- Unfold the liner and allow 30 minutes to warm in the sun before fitting — warm EPDM is more pliable
- Work in creases gradually from the deepest point outward — do not try to remove all creases before filling
- Seam tape: apply to clean, dry surfaces above 5°C; allow 24 hours cure minimum before filling
- Anchor edges in a 450–500mm deep trench; backfill with compacted clay
