Koi Pond Liner Guide UK – What the Professionals Specify
Koi Pond Liner Guide UK – What Professional Pond Builders Specify
Building a koi pond is a significant investment. The liner you choose will determine whether your fish thrive for decades or you face an expensive rebuild. This guide explains exactly what professional koi pond builders specify — and why.
⚠️ Critical: Not all EPDM is fish safe. Standard roofing EPDM contains carbon black which is toxic to koi. Always use EPDM-45 fish-safe certified grade. This is what we supply.
The Professional Specification for Koi Ponds
Ask any professional koi pond builder in the UK what liner they specify, and the answer is almost always the same: EPDM-45 fish-safe grade, minimum 1.02mm thickness.
Why? Three reasons:
- Koi are sensitive — they will detect and react to any toxic compounds leaching from a liner. EPDM-45 is the only grade certified safe for koi.
- Koi ponds are deep — typically 1.2-2m. The water pressure on the liner base is substantial. Thinner liners (0.75mm) can flex and fatigue over time; 1.02mm resists this.
- Koi are expensive — a collection of koi can be worth £5,000-£50,000+. The liner is the cheapest insurance policy in the build. Never compromise on it.
EPDM-45 vs Standard EPDM for Koi
| Feature | Standard EPDM (roofing grade) | EPDM-45 Fish Safe |
|---|---|---|
| Carbon black | Present ❌ | None ✅ |
| Aquatic toxicity tested | No ❌ | Yes ✅ |
| Safe for koi | No ❌ | Yes ✅ |
| What we supply | No | Yes — always ✅ |
Koi Pond Liner Size Calculator
Use this formula to calculate your liner size:
- Liner length = pond length + (2 × max depth) + 0.6m
- Liner width = pond width + (2 × max depth) + 0.6m
Example: 5m × 4m pond, 1.5m deep → liner = (5 + 3 + 0.6) × (4 + 3 + 0.6) = 8.6m × 7.6m → round up to 9m × 8m
